Digital adab begins with checking information, respecting privacy, and taking responsibility for what we share.
Overview
A realistic image may have been generated by AI. A message that sounds polite may still contain an unsupported accusation. Digital adab therefore matters from the moment we receive information to the point when we decide whether to pass it on.
Pressing send moves something from our personal space into another person's attention. Before doing so, consider whether the message is accurate, necessary, and respectful toward the people it mentions. Fast content creation does not remove responsibility for its effects.
Check before forwarding
Qur'an 49:6, in a summary of its meaning, instructs believers to verify news brought by an evildoer so that people are not harmed through ignorance. The value of verification is relevant to sharing information, including content generated or summarized by AI.
Check who first published a claim, when it appeared, and whether the circulating extract omits context. A screenshot without an identifiable source is not enough to establish a statement. If the facts remain unclear, delaying a share is a responsible choice.
When you discover an error in your own post, correct it where the original readers can see it. Quietly deleting it may not help those who already received the misinformation.
Respect the people behind the screen
In a summary of Sahih al-Bukhari 6018, believers in Allah and the Last Day are directed to speak well or remain silent. For digital communication, a practical question is whether our words help or belittle someone.
Do not use AI to humiliate a friend, fabricate someone's words, or create ridicule that is later excused as a joke. Ask permission before sharing another person's private story or image. The ability to recreate a face or voice is not the same as having consent.
Practise together
At home or school, discuss a fictional post. Ask children what needs checking and who might be affected. This creates space to think without exposing a real classmate's personal situation.
The School and Kids companions in Muslim AI can provide material for conversations about respectful communication. Adults should review responses and guide discussion according to a child's age.
Try: "Create two examples of comments about a disagreement, then help me consider which respects the other person and why." Digital adab develops through small choices made in real conversations.
